Early history

Bearifi started out with the name BearExtender, and was established in 2009 to help students connect to the University of California, Berkeley wireless network called “AirBears.” Due to the size of the campus and the number of buildings, wireless coverage of the campus is incomplete. BearExtender helped students connect on and off campus.

It was developed by a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, Product Design major and a graduate of Marymount Manhattan College, New York City, who has been working in the technology sector in product development. The original "BearExtender" was exclusively for Macs and was well reviewed in major publications including Engadget, TUAW, and Macworld magazine.

As we've grown

Since our launch in 2009, the use of BearExtender products has spiked worldwide, allowing travelers to get Wi-Fi in places they could not previously. BearExtender is also used in corporate environments as well as by the US Armed Forces.

Our team has recently launched new products geared toward PCs and the new 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard. In 2015, we launched our first high power repeater called BearExtender Edge, as well as an outdoor Wi-Fi booster for PCs called BearExtender Outdoor. We have phased out our original Mac Wi-Fi extender and plan no more USB based extenders for Macs. Instead we are investing in wireless repeating technology like BearExtender Edge that can be used across different platforms including Macs, Android tablets, and cell phones.

As we have grown to provide different types of Wi-Fi products that go beyond range extension, we realized our original name was not the best suited to encompass all we do. So on July 14, 2017, we changed our name to Bearifi. Bearifi will remain focused on the Wi-Fi industry. We like this choice because we still have our "Bear" identity tracing back to the days at University of California, Berkeley, and we have combined that with our mission of developing different types of products to improve your Wi-Fi.
